Great Kotaku Article on How Metacritic Improves Games

Wow: the publishers of “Fallout: New Vegas” agreed to give the developers $1 million if they got a score of about 85%… and they got an 84, largely because of bugs that multiple reviewers flagged as knocking their reviews down a notch.

Good.

Honestly, I have absolutely no qualms about penalizing developers for releasing an unfinished product, even developers as talented and cool as the guys at Obsidian. Metacritic quantifies critical opinion, which isn’t exactly a great thing to do for a lot of reasons, but it also qualifies products on a tangible scale that is broadly pretty accurate. Crowdsourcing: it can work, if the crowd is made up of professionals.
