One of the best video game companies in the history of the form has been shuttered by the know-nothing corporate overlords at the Walt Disney company. They suck. They own everything good now, and they will be shredding any vestiges of soul or dignity retained by characters and ideas created by some of the finest minds in the arts.
Lucasarts is one of the longest-lived videogame companies in existence. They’ve been operating since 1982 and created the SCUMM engine, absolutely the best system for creating and playing adventure games ever devised. You can still use it.
Now it’s dead, because George Lucas was a puckish billionaire who made funny things in his spare time and didn’t mind to fund a few boondoggles while good work was being done, and the Disney Company is a slave of the free market.
“After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games,” said the company in a statement. They laid off more than 150 people.
