Comics journalism is usually a thin scum of fan drool over a slab of press release boilerplate (looking at you, Newsarama) or the kind of snobbish nose-upturning you’d laugh at if it was opera criticism (hi there, Comics Journal!) Heidi MacDonald’s trade site “The Beat” is consistently the best-written and -informed of a very bad lot, which is not praise enough for it.
I am, seriously, totally OCD about an old superhero comic started by Alan Moore under the name “Marvelman” in the U.K. and then reprinted in the U.S. as “Marvelman” where Moore continued to write it to completion and then Neil Gaiman took it over and made it even better. Then it got canceled in mid-storyline.
Padraig O’Mealoid has a multi-part story about it at the link above, at the Beat, and man, it is just truly excellent. Go read it so you know what a big deal it will be if Marvel finally brings this book back.
